Ever the twain shall meet; relating international and domestic tourism
International conference, Jaipur, Rajasthan, India
Research Committee RC50 International Tourism, International Sociological Association
November, 24 – 26, 2008
Content of the conference
International tourism is a growth sector of great importance as ‘change agent’ in global social and economic transitions.
International tourism predominantly originated from the Western countries. In the last decade more and more tourists from non-Western countries participate in tourism. Expanding populations and economies of countries such as India, China, Indonesia, South-Korea, Japan and Vietnam will generate huge streams of ‘new’ international tourists.
The most spectacular change is the growth of non-Western domestic tourism. In China, for example, already in 2000 there were 740 million domestic tourists against 5.6 million outbound tourists.
This apparent change in the tourism phenomenon will ask for re-thinking tourism theory.
The Research Committee ‘International Tourism’ of the International Sociological Association organizes in Jaipur, Rajasthan, India, a conference in order to address these emerging global realities.
The title of the conference is: Ever the twain shall meet; relating international and domestic tourism. The conference aims at exchanging ideas, research results and research ambitions with regards to the question how the global model of the international tourism industry relates to local or domestic leisure, recreation and tourism patterns.
An international comparison of domestic tourism patterns and symbolisms along different cultures will not only reveal universals and specialties in leisure and tourism pursuits, but also give a clue to where domestic tourism and international globalized tourism may coincide or clash.
Aims of the conference
The conference serves multiple objectives. First of all, it is a so-called ‘in between meeting’ of Research Committee 50 International Tourism of ISA. ‘In between’ means between the world conferences of ISA, which take place every four years. The last was held in Durban SA, in 2006, and the next one will be in Göteborg, Sweden, in 2010. Members of RC 50 will exchange the results of their work and discuss new roads in sociological tourism paradigms and theory.
The second aim is to further the scientific exchanges of RC50 with colleagues all over the world, particularly from non-Western countries. The meeting around the conference theme must be a landmark in innovative tourism theorizing.
A third is also the intention to stimulate young and new upcoming centers of scientific work scholars in the field of tourism research.
In order to serve these different aims the conference offers a platform for exchange and discussion on the conference theme, as well as the opportunity to present actual work-in-progress of members and non-members on subjects that are not directly related to the conference theme as such.
The Program
The first day of the conference consists of a few selected key-note addresses and a panel discussion on the conference theme.
Two excellent speakers have been invited, and will come:
Prof. Dr. Erik Cohen, Hebrew University, Israel, and
Prof. Dr. John Tribe, University of Surrey, United Kingdom.
The Organising Committee is very proud welcoming both well-known scholars in our midst during this seminar.
The second day facilitates paper presentations around the conference theme in parallel workshops of the delegates, members as well as non-members of RC50.
The third day offers the opportunity for presenting the results of other scientific research into tourism. This includes the presentation of publications and exchange of thoughts on various subjects such as preparations for Göteborg, new RC50 publications and a possible PhD network.

Information about Accommodation
All the potential delegates are advised to book their accommodation latest by the end of July 2008 otherwise it may not be possible for them to have their choicest accommodation due to heavy tourist season in Jaipur.
Though several class Hotels are available in Jaipur in various categories but it has been possible to persuade only Hotel Clarks Amer to offer concessional rates as compared to very high tariff rates of other star hotels in Jaipur for the delegates of the conference in the high(est) tourist season. As such it would be much better if all the delegates of the conference decide to stay in 5 star Hotel Clarks Amer, which is also very close to the venue of the conference.
The concessional rate of Hotel Clarks Amer for the Conference Delegates is Indian Rupees 8,000 per day including all the taxes, morning tea and the breakfast both on single as well as double occupancy for their Superior and Privilege Rooms. The bookings for hotel Clarks Amer may be made through email: sales@clarksamer.com (Website: www.hotelclarks.com).
Such participants who are looking for 2 star / non-star and ordinary inexpensive accommodation may book for Hotel Arya Niwas / Hotel Jai Niwas for India Rupees 990 for a single AC room and Rs. 1500 for a double AC room (both without breakfast) through email: info@aryaniwas.com / jainiwas@aryaniwas.com (Website: www.aryaniwas.com / www.jainiwas.com)
Those who are looking for an ordinary suit (with a lobby and kitchenette) may opt for Hotel Om Niwas for Indian Rupees 2100 through email: omniwas@aryaniwas.com (Website: www.omniwas.co.in)
Such participants who are looking for 5 star luxury hotels may book their accommodation at Hotel Rambagh Palace, Jaipur. They would charge for a Luxury Room INR 26000 (single) and INR 27500 for a double room; and for Palace Rooms INR 35000 (single) and INR 36500 for a double room. Booking may be made through email: “Rambagh Palace – Reservations” rambagh.jaipur@tajhotels.com (Website: www.tajhotels.com).
